radio silence, dead air, dial tones...
I watched God Grew Tired of Us just now. Its a documentary about the Lost Boys of Sudan, refugees from the Sudanese war. Its more of a National Geographic Channel doc than some Errol Morris doc, but the content was interesting. The bulk of the film is about how these men adapted to America's comforts and culture. What was interesting to me was within a few months they realized how isolating a culture it is, how all people do is work and look out for themselves. They got jaded so fast! But then they'd say how blessed Americans are and how it is good to work hard. You got to watch them merge their Sudanese culture and values with American culture and values. For me, it was as much a documentary about America's faults and promises as it was about refugees.
Speaking of movies, I'm going to two events this week. I'm seeing Jean Eustache's 215 minute epic La Maman et la Putain (The mother and the whore). Its at the Siskel. I'm really excited because apparently its totally engrossing. New Edward says its one of the most intense pieces of cinema you can watch, and that you will end it exhausted. Awesome. Then on Thursday I'm going to some Harmony Korine thing. I hate Korine films, but this newest one has Werner Herzog acting in it as well as a Michael Jackson impersonator plot? Seems like something not to miss. Maybe I can ask Korine why all his movies are unwatchable.
I cleaned a lot today. I washed my windows, washed some of my blinds, cleaned my bathroom. The blinds are so gross here, the dorkus who lived here before me was disgusting. I spent 30 minutes on just half of one blind so I gave up. I'll have to do a bit at a time or go else go nuts with dingy wet paper towels (gag) and dirt.

Mister Lonely is quite possibly one of the most watchable movies ever. I know it's weird. If they have the script for sale, BUY IT. Very different and worth reading. Soooo good
